AN elderly Durban North resident was struck over the head with her own walking stick in a robbery on Tuesday afternoon. According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, the 85-year-old was accosted by a man who had jumped over the wall of her Cadogan Drive home.
“The incident occurred at about 1.30pm and the elderly resident was hit over the head by a walking stick. The resident managed to fight back and push the suspect away. In his haste he grabbed a cell phone and fled the home. The suspect was opportunistic and took advantage of the elderly woman,” Deokaran said.

About two hours later, the same suspect broke into a garage on Belgrave Crescent but was apprehended by a member of the public.
According to Marshall Security’s Kyle van Reenen, the member of the public spotted the suspect attempting to flee the property with garden tools and camping equipment.
“The suspect was arrested on site and handed over to the South African Police Services for further investigation and processing. The proactive and alert member of the public can be commended for his efforts,” he said.
