A passion for law

WITH 23 years in the legal profession, Charmaine Schwenn, award winning business woman and achiever, took the step earlier this year to establish her own law firm.

Based in Durban North, Schwenn Inc. Attorneys and Conveyancers provides a full spectrum of legal services for individuals and corporates throughout the province and boasts correspondent offices in major cities across the country.

For Charmaine, opening her own law firm is a highlight of her career and personal achievement. Together with her strong, professional legal team, she is committed to delivering the best possible legal assistance to each individual client.  “Our approach ensures that clients are kept updated at each stage of every case and we go above and beyond all expectations to ensure a positive outcome wherever possible. Our consistent positive feedback from satisfied clients is testament to our passion and commitment for what we do,” she said.

“We work hard to deliver innovative, practical, cost-effective solutions across our diverse range of legal services. Whether a client requires assistance or advice with a property transfer, drafting of a will or assistance with the management of an estate, an accident claim, divorce, merger, labour issue or any other legal challenge, we have a team of legal experts who are able to guide clients through every step of the way and find the most effective solution to whatever the challenge may be.

Charmaine’s passion for law is echoed by her team.  Over the past 23 years in the industry, she has earned herself a solid, professional reputation

Charmaine obtained her BA and LLB Degrees in 1992 and 1994, respectively, from the (then) University of Natal. In 2006 she wrote and passed her Conveyancing exam, achieving first place in the Province and second place countrywide.  She has twice been a finalist in the Business Women’s Association Regional Business Achiever Awards – Professional category (2008 and 2010) and in 2009 was a finalist in the Feather Awards, Courageous Woman category.  In 2011 Charmaine was also voted First Runner-up in the Umhlanga Women Achievers awards, as Achiever of the Year.  In 2012 she was a finalist in the Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry : KZN Women of Excellence 2012 – Law.  On 18 June this year, she was appointed by the Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development as a Commissioner for the Small Claims Court on 18 June 2018.

Her accomplishments are equally impressive. She was chairperson of KZN Women in Business 2010 -2011. In 2011, she was recognised for her role in developing and growing the company and for contributing to the upliftment and empowerment of women, being awarded first place in the legal category of South Africa’s Most Influential Women in Business and Government Awards.

Her success has not come without its own struggles. Charmaine says learning to balance work and life has its own challenges, especially now having started her own law firm.

“I have a wonderful support structure and family and love playing with my rescue cats.  I try do as much social responsibility work as possible.  It feeds my soul.  It also helps that I love the work that I do!

I’m passionate and determined to make the most of each day. Tomorrow is not promised, so I make sure that I do what I can each day. Time flies, whether you are having fun or not, so you might as well spend it doing what you love!

Looking to the future, she is determined to grow her company to be recognised as a leader in the industry with a reputation of excellence and integrity.

Her advice to other women looking to launch their own business is simple: “Cash flow is king.  Understand your accounting system and ensure that your cash flow is managed,” she said.

Empower yourself, up-skill, train and network. Build your future and make the opportunities that you want. Once you have mastered that, reach out and draw those alongside you that might need mentorship and help in their journeys.
