THREE elderly German tourists were robbed by a gang of suspects armed with assault rifles while en route to King Shaka International Airport on Sunday afternoon. According to Prem Balram of Reaction Unit South Africa, the tourists, believed to be in their 80s were due to fly home today.

“We were called out to the scene after receiving a call from a passing motorist reporting an armed robbery in progress on the N2 at the eMdloti beach offramp. Their Uber driver claimed he had picked up his clients from their hotel in uMhlanga and were on their way to the airport when they were boxed in by the occupants of a BMW and a VW Golf 7.

“Four suspects who were armed with assault rifles approached the victims and robbed them off their luggage and valuables before fleeing in their getaway vehicles. The suspects wore balaclavas to hide their identity. The victims were not injured during the robbery,” Balram said.

The incident comes two days after an armed gang in a white BMW opened fire on a KwaZulu-Natal businessman on the N2/M41 uMhlanga off-ramp. The businessman tried to escape the gang and sought refuge inside Netcare Umhlanga Hospital where the gang found his vehicle and stole R100 000 in cash.
