GREENWOOD Park police are urging all second-hand goods dealers to register their business. This as they have embarked on a campaign aimed at tackling metal theft.

According to the ACT NO. 6 of  2009, any person in the business of dealing second-hand goods is compelled to register. The act also states that any person who recycles any controlled metal must be registered as a recycler in addition to being registered as a dealer.

In this campaign Greenwood Park SAPS visit various businesses in the area, educating owners about the importance of abiding to this law.

“Last month alone we had 12 cases reported on non-ferrous items (coppers pipes, aircon and gate motors) theft. We urge businesses to register while they still have time. Failure to register may lead to the business being shut down,” said Greenwood Park SAPS constable Sihle Makhoba.

Makhoba added that failure to carry out this law may lead to a prison sentence.

“A person convicted of a contravention of this act may be sentenced to a fine or to imprisonment for a period from three to 10 years depending on which section of the act he/she contravened,” added Makhoba.
