uMhlanga ‘repair’ con-man arrested outside court

DURBAN North SAPS arrested an uMhlanga con-man outside the Durban Magistrate’s Court just minutes after he appeared on charges for a separate fraud case in the Berea area. Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, said the suspect had already scammed four people in the uMhlanga area out of R15 000 – he allegedly pretended to be a repairman.

It has since been discovered that the suspect, who lives in Phoenix, is linked to nine cases.

“The detective assigned to the case, Detective Sipho Shezi, acted on information the suspect, who is in his 30s, was appearing at the Durban Magistrate’s Court on a separate case. Shezi along with two other detectives effected the arrest. He is due to appear in court soon and we are trying to link him to more cases.

“The modus-operandi in the scams are all the same in the area. The conman pretends to know the children of the people he scams and in some cases says he is a computer repairman, a car mechanic or a phone repairman and tells the victim their children owe him a sum of money not exceeding R4 000 ,” Deokaran explained.
