THE bridge over the N2 from Umhlanga Newtown to Bridge city, KwaMashu is expected to be completed by the middle of 2018. The interchange and bridge on east side of the N2 currently under construction, just north of the M41/N2 Mount Edgecombe interchange is part of GO!Durban, the new integrated rapid public transport network that is currently under development.

The bridge is part of the GO!Durban C9 route that will link the planned Cornubia hub and Umhlanga Newtown to KwaMashu and the CBD. In the short term, this bridge and its on ramps straddling the N2 will act as an additional measure to alleviate congestion as it provides two new access points to uMhlanga. No off ramps are planned as part of this phase of construction.

Two dedicated bus lanes for GO!Durban’s articulated fleet will be provided for, on the 125 metre bridge across the N2. The bridge will have six mixed-use traffic lanes as well as the required pedestrian sidewalks.

The functional structure promises to have aesthetic appeal and every effort will be made to minimise its impact on the environment.
The goal for the GO!Durban integrated rapid public transport network is to eventually have eight dedicated bus routes or corridors linking most areas of the city from north to south (Tongaat to Prospecton) and west to east, (Mpumalanga to the CBD) with one rail route being developed by PRASA connecting KwaMashu to the CBD and onto the southern areas of Isipingo and Umlazi.
