Domestic worker robbed in uMhlanga

A DOMESTIC worker was robbed by two men on Portland Drive in uMhlanga Avenue on Saturday afternoon. According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, the incident occurred at about 9.20am close to the M4.

“The domestic worker was walking to catch a taxi when she was approached by two men. One of them pulled out a knife and demanded she hand over her valuables. His accomplice then riffled through her belongings stealing her cell phone and purse. The domestic worker spotted the men running towards the M4. They made off with R2 000 worth of damage,” he said.

There has been a spate of armed muggings targeting domestic workers this year.

Last month Durban North SAPS arrested three men behind a spate of robberies of domestic workers and women needing lifts in the area.

According to Deokaran the suspects were using a white Quantum mini-bus. The driver’s accomplices pretended to be passengers and then robbed people at knife and gunpoint.

He also confirmed the men arrested were linked to five other cases in the Greenwood Park and Glenwood areas.

Durban North SAPS has urged domestic workers, where possible to try and walk in big groups to avoid falling victim to muggings.
