ONE person was killed and 12 others were injured after a horrific head-on collision on Chris Hani Road (North Coast Road) on Saturday morning. The accident occurred just after 5.20am near the Queen Nandi Drive intersection.
According to Crisis Medical’s Kyle van Reenen, reports from the scene suggest the driver of a Volkswagen Polo hatchback, lost control of the vehicle at high speed, while traveling on the south bound side.
“This caused the vehicle to careen across the center median, before colliding head on with a minibus taxi on the north bound side of the roadway.
“Eyewitness reports allege the driver of the Volkswagen fled the scene on foot in an unknown direction shortly after the collision. The facts surrounding the incident are speculative and form subject of a South African Police Services investigation,” he said.
According to Chris Botha of Netcare 911, the injured were taken through to various hospitals.
“Twelve taxi commuters sustained moderate to minor injuries. Paramedics treated the injured before they transported them to various hospitals in area for further medical care,” he said.
