THERE are currently only 12 runners in the world who have completed 40 or more Comrades Marathon races. One of them is Durban North resident, David Williams, who this year will be attempting his 42nd Comrades Marathon. The 65-year-old, who was unable to complete his 42nd attempt last year said he is determined to turn his misfortune around.

“It’s a repeat 42nd attempt for me but I’ve been working incredibly hard this year. I’ve been working on improving my speed work and despite setbacks, like my runner’s bump, I feel this is character building for me. I’m determined to complete this year’s marathon no matter what,” he said.

Williams, who is seventh on the list of completing the most Comrades Marathon ran his first race at the age of 21 in 1973. Incredibly Williams, who missed out in 1974 (he can’t remember why) has run every one of the Comrades Marathons since then.

“In 2013 – the year of extreme weather conditions I missed my first 40th attempt, I completed the race but after the gun. Last year I missed out as well. At this stage of my life, I’m living one year at a time. I can’t aim too high,” he laughed. “I’m going to keep going for as long as I can. My mental approach is not to be pressured by the weight of expectation,” he said.
