Desmond D’Sa of the South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA) has called for an independent investigation into Durban fire.

THE vociferous outcry of residents who say they were affected by the three-day long Durban fire was poorly reflected at a public meeting last week with a mere eight residents attending. The meeting, held at St Luke’s Church in Glenahsley, saw members of South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA) call for an independent investigation into the fire at the property owned by Transnet.

The meeting was the second of a round of public meetings to be held in various communities affected by the fire. Despite the poor turnout, Desmond D’Sa has urged residents who, were affected by the blaze, to contact the organisation so they could demand answers from the City and Transnet.

“The residents of South Durban have for many years fallen victims to air pollution caused by various fires in the area. This fire however, was the first time that it wasn’t just residents in the area that were affected. So many residents that have attended the meeting are anxious and concern. They are worried they may not be able to escape the next fire. We feel the City should be protecting the well-being of the residents and ratepayers of Durban,” he said.
