eThekwini Municipality City Manager - Sipho Nzuza, with Thami Manyathi, Head of the eThekwini Transport Authority and Suben Govender, Customer Relationship Manager at the City's Information Management Unit, test out the free WiFi on a People Mover bus.

OVER the next nine months, the eThekwini Municipality’s Transport Authority will be testing out on-board Wi-Fi possibilities on ten People Mover buses that travel in the inner City, as they look at internet provision for the new integrated rapid public transport network GO!Durban.

Using the People Mover as a vehicle for a live working test will be for a limited time only providing free Wi-Fi access of two hundred and fifty megabytes (250MB) daily to commuters, during their ride around the City.

Going forward when GO!Durban becomes operational, the provision of Wi-Fi on buses travelling on the major routes, as well as within stations will enable for efficient commutes allowing commuters to access time-tables, check out routes and connections, and watch for updates from the eThekwini Transport Authority’s management centre.

The public are to be aware that this testing is over a limited period as to validate the proof of concept which may be applied to the GO!Durban system, and is not a permanent Wi-Fi solution to existing public operators of the People Mover.

GO!Durban branding will be placed on the side of the People Mover buses so that commuters can identify which buses will provide free Wi-Fi over this period, with connectivity detail provided on-board the bus. The network is named eThekwini_WiFi and users will initially need to create an “account” by inputting their details or sign in by using their social media accounts. These login details will be used for future connectivity.
