Kurt Marais brings GYROKINESIS® classes to Durban

Exercise shouldn’t work against your body, but rather with your body’s natural range of movements.

Instead, whole body exercise should help your body rather than force you to push yourself into uncomfortable poses and postures that leave you feeling broken rather than empowered.

This is the underlying ethos that Kurt Marias tries to get across when he speaks about the revolutionary GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® which he trained in during his journey as a dancer which has literally taken him around the world.

Back in South Africa, he now offers GYROKINESIS® classes locally. “It’s the perfect exercise form because it is literally for everyone!” he explained when asked what it is and how it differs from other types of exercise classes. “It is unlike anything I had encountered before, but it made so much sense I just had to get involved and I love how inclusive it is and how everyone can participate in it and it helps everyone,” enthused Marais. The methodology was created by Juliu Horvath, meditated on the movement of nature and all the myriad elements which naturally exist within it. While he was conceiving the movement system he thought about how water moves, how wind moves, and how trees, fish and birds move within the elements in which they live. Humans too have natural movements within their own living space. These were incorporated into the system.

“At the end of a class people feel great and they start to see the difference in their mobility and their bodies within just three classes,” explained Kurt who runs classes in Glenwood, Morningside, and Durban North.

GYROKINESIS® exercises are performed on the floor or on a chair, so can be performed anywhere, at any time and can be adapted to fit anyone’s ability. People from all walks of life including accomplished athletes, fitness enthusiasts, senior citizens, and people recovering from an injury or dealing with a disability take GYROKINESIS® classes. The GYROTONIC® method, of which, Kurt is also an accredited instructor, uses specialised equipment and is designed to take the body beyond current limitations. By the end of a GYROKINESIS® session, people can expect to feel awakened as their entire system is brought into greater balance.

“Because it uses each person’s own natural range of movement and there isn’t any forcing and pushing beyond the body’s own ability to move, there isn’t the danger of hurting oneself making it ideal for every person wanting to exercise without risking injury,” explained Kurt.

His classes run at The Breathing Space in Glenwood on Monday mornings from 10-11am and at The Beat Room on Florida Road on Wednesday evenings from 5:15-6:15pm.
Durban North classes are run at Maverick Design Studio at 68 Adelaide Tambo Drive, Durban North on Monday evenings from 5-6pm and Tuesday mornings from 8-9am.
