UMHLANGA now has its first mobile app, ‘Umhlanga Rocks’, an initiative driven by the uMhlanga Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP). The app, available for Android and smart phones was developed to improve uMhlanga Rocks experience. Cara Reilly of the UIP said the growth in the mobile industry prompted the decision to develop the app with local company App Fabulous.

“They helped design this from top to bottom, we were very specific in what we wanted and they were so amazing. We took into account that about 95 per cent of tourists use digital tools in search of the best experience before dining out or visiting. We quickly realized that this is a golden opportunity to improve the visitors’ experience, create a new way to attract visitors, provide easy access to information and get direct feedback from visitors,” she said.

Reilly added the app also offered information about uMhlanga’s most iconic landmarks, including the ‘Whale Bone Pier’ and the ‘lighthouse’.

“A few seconds on a search engine will give you reams of information on uMhlanga Rocks. What seems to be lacking is a central hub of information that is more than a business directory, but actually provides ‘insider-info’ on the place. It is this lack of a single source of information that sparked the development of the uMhlanga Rocks app.

“The app is aimed at anyone from the Durban local looking for a wedding present, or a day visitor wanting to know about umbrella hire, to an uMhlanga Rocks employee on a lunch break or a tourist wanting evening entertainment, and as such we have grouped similar information together making it easier for people to access the exact information they need,” Reilly said.

What’s more, if any uMhlanga business hasn’t been listed in the app, contact the UIP by emailing cara@urbanmgt.co.za or comment on the UIP’s Facebook page.

The app is free and is available from iTunes and Google Play Store.
