Tech Thursday: Two new Facebook features you should know about

Worldwide, there are over 1.86 billion monthly active Facebook users (Facebook MAUs) which is a 17 percent increase from last year.

Needless to say, Facebook remains the most popular social media application in the world. Although with the growing popularity of SnapChat, Instagram and Twitter, the app has had to move with the times and introduce some new features.

Here are two new features from Facebook:

1. Messenger Day is Facebook’s answer to Snapchat

Messenger Day was rolled out to users worldwide in March 2017 after several months of testing. It has the same features as Snapchat Stories, including stickers, filters and posts disappearing after 24 hours.


  1. Get started by opening Messenger, and tapping the “Add to your day” button at the top of your inbox.
  2. Snap a photo or video of what’s around you.
  3. Tap the smiley face icon in the top right to add art and effects and then tap to add to your photo or video.
  4. Add text over your images by tapping the “Aa” icon. To overlay a drawing, tap the squiggly line in the top right corner.
  5. Once you’ve completed editing, tap the arrow in the bottom right corner. You can add directly to your day, save it to your phone’s camera roll, and/or you can choose to send it to a specific person or group of people.

You can customize how you share by tapping the “more” icon and then choosing “Everyone Except” or “Custom.”


2. Facebook Live promotes video content

Live video has taken off on social media and Facebook followed suit by launching Facebook Live. Facebook Live allows users to upload live videos on their profiles and share them with their friends. Live Video publishing tool for Pages now lets users use existing video software or hardware to create professional-looking live video content.


  1. Go to your own Facebook profile and open up the status bar. Click on What’s on your mind? at the top of your News Feed.
  1. Tap the “Live Video” icon, which looks like a video camera. You’ll have to give Facebook access to your camera and microphone when prompted.
  2. Choose your privacy setting and audience. You have the option of sharing to the public, your friends or click on “only me” if you only want to test it.
  3. Write an interesting status update that will show up on the status bar above the video when it is posted on your newsfeed.
  4. Set up your camera view before you “go live” by clicking the rotating arrows on the top right. This ensures your camera is in the right direction for the video.
