DURBAN North SAPS have arrested a 28-year-old man in connection with a stolen mountain bike worth R40 000. The suspect had earlier tried to avoid officers who spotted the man on the M4 bridge. A foot chase ensued leading to his arrest.

“Our officers saw the man struggling to ride the bicycle. As they were driving closer to him he saw the police vehicle and tried to get away. He fell off the bike, eventually abandoning it. A foot chase ensued and the suspect was apprehended. We found a pouch on the mountain bike with the owner’s details on it, he hadn’t known it had been stolen until our officers contacted him.

“He said he had taken his bike out for a morning cycle and had gone into his house to make coffee when the theft occurred. The 28-year-old suspect denied having stolen the bike. He has been charged with being in possession of suspected stolen property. The owner positively identified his bicycle,” he said.
